FERRET CARE TIPS!
Ferret Care Tips
1. Buy the largest cage you can. Cover wire floors with padding. Fleece crate pads work very
well. Walking on wire can cripple your ferret.
2. Feed a premium ferret food only. Cat food does not provide the nutritional support a ferret
requires. Do not feed people food. Their digestive systems cannot digest it. Use a secured
feeder.
3. Use a water bottle for water. Give fresh water daily. Use only filtered or bottled water.
4. Use only non-scented pellet litter in a litter box. Clay litter causes respiratory infections in
ferrets. Do not use pine-scented pellets. Clean litter box 1 to 2 times daily.
5. Provide daily FerreTone supplement.
6. Check nails regularly. They grow fast. Use cat clippers to cut. A drop of FerreTone on your
arm will keep them happy and busy while you cut them.
7. Provide a hammock and several other soft bedding items. Keep them clean/laundered.
8. Provide several “ferret safe” toys. Many toys for cats and dogs are not suitable for ferrets,
because they will chew and ingest them, which can cause a dangerous continual and life-
threatening blockage.
9. Your ferret will need to visit a veterinarian once a year while they are young – every 6 months
when they are older. They need distemper and rabies vaccinations. Make sure you find a
ferret-savvy veterinarian. DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO ADMINISTER FELINE VACCINES! They
will NOT protect your ferret. Use ferret vaccines only.
10. Your ferret may become infested with fleas. Your veterinarian can apply 2-3 drops of feline
Advantage. Do not use shampoos, dips, treatments, etc., made for dogs or cats. Use only
ferret shampoos and treatments.
11. Do not bathe your ferret too frequently. It will cause their skin/coat to become over-dry and
irritated. This will also actually stimulate their glands and cause more odor. Instead, spray
with Ferret Conditioner Odorizer Spray.
12. Ferrets need their ears washed regularly. Use a cotton swab or cotton ball. Never use
oils. A little peroxide to slightly dampen cotton will do. Only cleanse the outer ear. Never put
anything down their ear canal.
13. Ferrets can become infected with internal parasites. A stool sample can be checked by
your veterinarian.
14. Ferrets must be kept in their cage or a specially made ferret room when you are not there
to supervise them for their own safety.
15. Never let children handle your ferret without supervision.
16. Do not leave your ferret out with other pets without supervision.
17. Your ferret is a very social pet. You must be prepared to spend at least 2-4 hours a day
with them playing out of the cage.
18. Use only a ferret harness on your ferret when using a leash.
19. Recliner chairs, bath tubs and toilets, are three major killers of ferrets.
20. As with any pet, KEEP ALL DANGEROUS/POISONOUS/TOXIC items put up and out of
reach of your ferret. Be aware that many houseplants and yard plants are toxic!
21. If your ferret becomes ill or just is not acting right, DO NOT WAIT to contact your vet. They
are very small. Time is of the essence in saving them when they become ill. Ferrets are
predisposed to many genetic diseases. Cancer is prevalent among them.
22. Never allow your home to become overly hot. Ferrets do not handle extreme heat well.
23. Places of hazards around your home are electrical cords behind stoves and refrigerators,
inside cabinets and heating ducts. Be sure and block to secure them.
